Inuit Games Team Announced

Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska today announced the selection of the Junior Boys and Girls and Open Men’s Inuit Games teams for the 2006 Arctic Winter Games. These athletes and coaches will be part of Alaska’s 377-person delegation to the 2006 Arctic Winter Games, scheduled for March 5 through March 11, 2006 in the Kenai Peninsula Borough.

The team was selected by Sport Coordinator Gina Kalloch from around the state from interested athletes who applied and was based in part upon the results those athletes achieved in NYO and WEIO competition.

The Junior Girls team includes Jasmin Simeon, Aniak; Danielle Malchoff, Port Graham; Tanya Slim, Kipnuk; Virginia Angaiak, Tununak; Annie Patrick, Toksook Bay. The coach for the Junior Girls team is Candace Parker, Anchorage.

The Senior Women’s team consists of Alissa Joseph, Bethel; Tracy Bacon, Anchorage; Lynette Stettinger, Wasilla; Elizabeth Rexford, Fairbanks, and one more athlete to be named.

Toskook bay and Tununak dominate the Junior Boys team. From Tununak are Jazmin James, Harry Albert and Thomas Albert; from Toksook Bay are Simeon Aluska and Jason Tulik. Sanford "Sam" Strange, Anchorage, is the Junior Boys team coach

The members of the Open Men’s team come from around the state. Leading the 2006 team is One-Foot High Kick, Alaska High Kick and One-Arm Reach world record-holder Jesse Frankson of Pt. Hope. Billy Bodfish of Wainwright, Palmer’s David Thomas, and Manuel Tumalak and John Chagluak of Anchorage round out the squad.

The Arctic Winter Games is an international, biennial celebration of youth, sport and culture. The first Arctic Winter Games was held in 1970 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Approximately 2000 athletes, coaches, team staff and officials will participate in the 2006 Games. Participating delegations include Alaska. Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Alberta North, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Greenland, Magadan (Russia), Yamal (Russia), and Samiland (comprised of the Lapp peoples of Norway, Sweden and Finland). The 2008 Games will be hosted in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

Competition will be held in Alpine Skiing, Badminton, Basketball, Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Dene Games, Dog Mushing, Figure Skating, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Indoor Soccer, Inuit Games, Short-Track Speedskating, Snowboarding, Snowshoe Biathlon, Snowshoeing, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Wrestling. In addition, a cultural delegation will perform at the Games.
